Mandevilla thrives in our warm and humid climate.

  • Botanical Name: Mandevilla spp.
  • Common Names: Mandevilla, Dipladenia (closely related)
  • Type: Tropical, flowering vine
  • Growth Habit: Fast-growing, twining vine (can also be bushy, depending on variety)
  • Flowers: Trumpet-shaped, colors include pink, red, white, and yellow
  • Foliage: Glossy, dark green leaves
  • Size: Vines can reach 10–20 ft with support; bush varieties grow 1–3 ft tall

In Zone 10, it thrives year-round outdoors without risk of frost.

Care Instructions:

Sunlight:

  • Full sun to partial shade
  • At least 4–6 hours of sun daily; morning sun with some afternoon shade is ideal in Florida to prevent leaf scorch

Soil:

  • Well-draining, slightly acidic soil
  • Use a light potting mix with sand or perlite if planting in containers

Watering:

  • Keep soil evenly moist, especially during hot months
  • Water when top inch of soil is dry
  • Avoid waterlogging—ensure good drainage

Fertilizer:

  • Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10 or 20-20-20) every 4–6 weeks during growing season (spring through early fall)
  • Liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks can also boost flowering

Support & Pruning:

  • Vining types need trellises, arbors, or fences for support
  • Prune in late winter or early spring to control shape and encourage new growth

Pests & Diseases:

  • Watch for aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites
  • Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed
  • Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal leaf spots

Cold Protection (if needed):

  • Unlikely in Tampa, but if temps drop below 40°F:
    • Cover plant with frost cloth or move containers indoors🪴
  • In-Ground: Thrives in Tampa with proper soil and drainage
  • Containers: Great for patios or porches—easier to manage growth and move if needed
